Veterans Day 2026 in Eugene: Wednesday, November 11 and Flowers for Those Who Served

Veterans Day 2026 is Wednesday, November 11, five days from now. It is a different day from Memorial Day, with a different tone, and a surprising number of people mix the two up. This guide covers what the day is, what Eugene and Springfield have done on it, one local organization worth knowing, and how flowers fit in. We are florists, so we stay close to what we know: the day itself, the local facts we could confirm, and what to send.

📅 Always November 11

Veterans Day is observed officially on November 11 no matter which day of the week it falls on. This year that is a Wednesday. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that when the date lands on a weekday, many communities hold parades and celebrations on the weekend before or after, so more people can take part. Another detail the VA is firm about: it is “Veterans Day,” with no apostrophe, because the day does not belong to veterans so much as it is a day for honoring all of them.

🕊️ Veterans Day Is Not Memorial Day

Memorial Day, in late May, is for remembering those who died in military service. Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor everyone who served honorably, in wartime or peacetime, and the VA says it is largely meant to thank living veterans. That difference sets the tone for flowers. A Memorial Day bouquet goes to a grave and is quiet and solemn. A Veterans Day bouquet can go to a living veteran, with a card that says thank you. Our Memorial Day cemetery guide covers the other day.

📜 How the Day Got Here

President Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919, as the first Armistice Day, marking the armistice that took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 and ended the Great War. For decades it honored mainly veterans of World War I. In 1954 the name was changed to Veterans Day, to include the veterans of World War II and Korea. For a brief time the observance was moved from year to year to create three-day weekends, and by 1978 it was restored to November 11.

🌺 The Poppy Question

In the United States, wearing a red poppy is traditionally a Memorial Day custom, not a Veterans Day one. It comes from the 1915 poem “In Flanders Fields.” In Canada, by contrast, many people wear poppies on November 11. Even so, the Eugene post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars lists a Veterans Day Buddy Poppy fundraiser on its website, to support local veterans, so the poppy has a place on this day in Eugene too.

🏛️ Eugene’s VFW Post 293

VFW Post 293, known as the Willamette Post, was chartered on February 5, 1920. Its website says it has more than 285 members who span every major conflict from World War II to the present, and that it meets at the Veterans Memorial Building on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. It also points out that members must have served in a war, campaign or expedition on foreign soil or in hostile waters.

Here is what the post did last year, 2025, when Veterans Day fell on a Tuesday: a Veterans Day observance at 11 a.m. at the post’s address, 1626 Willamette Street, with refreshments in the upstairs ballroom, open to all. We have not found a 2026 time listed yet, so please confirm it with the post before you go.

🗓️ What Eugene and Springfield Did Last Year

A regional event list published by Lookout Eugene-Springfield for 2025 gives a sense of the pattern, and 2026 plans will be posted closer to the day. Last year:

  • Springfield held a veterans breakfast with the mayor at the Justice Center at 9 a.m., co-hosted with American Legion Post No. 40.
  • Creswell held an observance at the VFW post there at 11 a.m., with a community singing group.
  • Veneta held a veterans ceremony in the days before, at its community center.
  • Florence held its Veterans Day parade at 1 p.m., down Bay Street through Old Town.
  • Lane Transit District ran regular service and let veterans ride free by telling the bus operator which branch they served in.
  • Closures: most government offices, banks, post offices, public libraries and schools were closed, and so was the University of Oregon.

The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs keeps a statewide Veterans Day calendar at oregondva.com/veterans-day, and it is the best place to look for this year’s Lane County events as local groups add them. Check hours for anything you need that day, since closures vary by year.

🌹 What to Send, and to Whom

This part is our own advice. Because Veterans Day is about thanking living veterans, the best flowers are ones that go to a person:

  • A veteran you know. A father, a neighbor, a coworker, a coach. A simple arrangement with a card that says “Thank you for your service” and a line of your own. Some veterans do not want a fuss, so a quiet note is often better than a big gesture.
  • A veteran in a care community. Plants are an excellent choice here because they last and need little care. Our guide to flowers for veterans and military families covers VA hospitals, funerals and Gold Star families.
  • A table at a gathering. If your group, church, club or workplace is hosting a Veterans Day lunch or breakfast, one low arrangement dresses the table.
  • Red, white and blue. Red roses, white carnations or lilies and blue delphinium or iris are a classic, respectful combination. It does not have to be patriotic to be kind.

We deliver seven days a week, so Wednesday delivery is no problem. If you are sending to an office, call first, since many are closed on the holiday; a home or a care community is usually the better address. If you are sending beyond Eugene, our delivery pages for Springfield, Creswell and Cottage Grove list the areas we cover. Our fresh-cut flower care tips help the bouquet last.
