Florence and the Central Oregon Coast: A Florist’s Guide to the Rhododendron Town at the Mouth of the Siuslaw, the Cobra Lilies of Darlingtonia, the Dunes, the Sea Lion Caves, a Lighthouse or Two, and How to Send Flowers to Someone Who Lives There

For a lot of Eugene families, the coast is not a place you visit once a year. It is where a parent retired to, where a sister has a rental, where a friend runs a business, or where you drive on a free Saturday because Highway 126 goes there. Florence, at the mouth of the Siuslaw River, is the nearest town on the central Oregon coast, and it has more to offer a flower person than you might expect: a rhododendron festival that is more than a century old, a bog full of carnivorous cobra lilies, and a coastline of dunes, sea caves, and lighthouses. This guide covers Florence and the nearby communities, and then the practical question we hear the most: how do you send flowers to someone there?

We deliver to Florence, Dunes City, Yachats, Reedsport, and Winchester Bay, and we have a delivery page for the central coast with the short, practical version. This post is the longer story.

🗺️ Where Florence Is

According to Wikipedia, Florence is a coastal city in Lane County, at the mouth of the Siuslaw River on the Pacific Ocean, about midway between Newport to the north and Coos Bay to the south along U.S. Route 101. It sits at nearly the same latitude as Eugene, which is why it feels like a straight shot west, and it is just north of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Wikipedia lists a 2020 census population of 9,396.

The town has a few places that are worth knowing by name. Old Town Florence is on the Siuslaw riverfront, with the Port of Siuslaw marina to the east and the Art Deco Siuslaw River Bridge, built in 1936, to the west, and a boardwalk promenade along the marina. The Siuslaw Pioneer Museum is in a historic 1905 schoolhouse. And, in a piece of local history that Florence has fully embraced, on November 12, 1970 the Oregon Department of Transportation used explosives to try to dispose of a dead beached whale, with results that Wikipedia calls unintended: pieces landed far from where they were meant to go, including on a car more than a quarter mile away. In 2020, residents voted to name a new park Exploding Whale Memorial Park. It is not a flower story, but you will hear it within about ten minutes of arriving.

🌺 The Rhododendron Town

Here is the flower story. Wikipedia says Florence has held an annual Rhododendron Festival, a flower and garden show, since 1908. That is well over a century of a coastal town celebrating the shrub that loves its weather. Wikipedia describes Florence’s climate as a Mediterranean type that is cooler and wetter than usual: summers as much as 9.4°F cooler than Eugene by daily mean, and, outside a short dry season in July and August, rainfall that is frequent and heavy, nearly twice what the Willamette Valley gets. We should be careful about drawing too neat a line from rain to rhododendrons, since we are florists and not horticulturists, but the pattern is hard to miss. Rhododendrons and other acid-loving, moisture-loving shrubs thrive on that coast, and the gardens of Florence show it.

We have not been able to confirm the dates of next year’s festival, so check with the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce before you plan around it. If you want to read about another flower-centered celebration closer to home, our field guide to the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta is a good companion, since Highway 126 takes you through Veneta on the way to the coast.

🐍 The Cobra Lilies of Darlingtonia

About five miles north of Florence on U.S. 101 is the strangest flower stop on the coast. Darlingtonia State Natural Site is an 18-acre state park, and, according to Wikipedia, it is the only Oregon state park dedicated to protecting a single plant species: Darlingtonia californica, the cobra lily or western pitcher plant. It is a carnivorous plant. It lures insects into hollow, vertical pitchers with a sweet, sticky secretion, and the top of each pitcher is flared into a dome with a forked “tongue” that gives the plant the look of a rearing cobra. In late spring it bears purple and yellow flowers on stems that rise about 12 inches above the plants. Wikipedia says cobra lilies are found only in moist meadows and bogs with acidic, low-nitrogen soils, and that the park has a short loop trail through a peat bog area overlooking them.

If you read our Halloween posts this week, you will recognize the theme: a florist, a plant that eats things, and a very good reason to keep your fingers out of the bog.

🏖️ The Dunes

South of Florence begins the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, part of Siuslaw National Forest. According to Wikipedia, it stretches about 40 miles from the Siuslaw River in Florence to the Coos River in North Bend, and the dunes are the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America, with some reaching 500 feet above sea level. About 7,000 acres of the area is open sand, roughly a fifth of the total. Recreation includes hiking, fishing, canoeing, camping, and off-highway vehicle riding.

There is a plant story here, too. Wikipedia notes that the invasive plants seen on the dunes today are the result of a twentieth-century effort to stabilize the dunes by planting grasses. Those grasses did stabilize the sand, and then flourished to the point of interfering with the natural shaping of the dunes. The Oregon Dunes Restoration Collaborative, formed in 2014, works with government agencies to preserve and restore the dunes. It is a good reminder that what you plant matters, even when you plant it for good reasons.

🦭 Sea Lion Caves and the Lighthouse

Eleven miles north of Florence on U.S. 101 are the Sea Lion Caves, a connected system of sea caves open to the Pacific. Wikipedia says the main cavern has a floor of about two acres under a vaulted rock dome about 125 feet high, and that the cave and the sea cliffs just outside it have become the only known mainland rookery and hauling area, a wintering home, of the Steller sea lion. The cavern walls are covered with lichens, algae, and mineral stains in greens, pinks, purples, and reds. It is, in its way, a flower garden made of rock.

Two miles beyond is Heceta Head Light, 13 miles north of Florence and 13 miles south of Yachats. Wikipedia says the 56-foot lighthouse was built in 1894, sits midway up a 205-foot headland, and shines a beam visible for 21 nautical miles, the strongest light on the Oregon Coast. The assistant keepers’ house operates as a bed-and-breakfast. Wikipedia also says the lighthouse holds a Victorian Christmas Open House each December, with the keeper’s house decorated in a Victorian style, tours, holiday music, and treats. If you want to plan around it, check Oregon State Parks for the date.

🌊 North to Yachats, South to Reedsport

Yachats is a small city in Lincoln County 23 miles north of Florence, with a 2020 population of 994, according to Wikipedia. It has a lot for a town its size. The Little Log Church and Museum, built in 1926, houses local historical artifacts and, Wikipedia says, hosts a wedding vow renewal ceremony open to any couple every Valentine’s Day. The Yachats 804 Trail is a historic footpath of about three-quarters of a mile with views of surf, tidal pools, and native vegetation. The Yachats Commons is home to an outdoor farmers market from May through October, and the Yachats Public Library holds a seed bank of free vegetable seeds for gardeners. Wikipedia also lists a village mushroom festival in October and a Celtic music festival in November, and winter and spring whale watching weeks at the Cape Perpetua visitor center. Dates shift from year to year, so check before you drive.

Reedsport and Winchester Bay are to the south, in Douglas County around the mouth of the Umpqua River. Wikipedia describes Reedsport as a coastal town of 4,310 people, three miles north of Winchester Bay, with an Oregon Dunes interpretive center and the Umpqua Discovery Center in town. The Dean Creek Wildlife Area, three miles east of Reedsport on Oregon Route 38, is a 1,000-acre preserve where, Wikipedia says, you can view 60 to 100 Roosevelt elk year round. At Winchester Bay, the Umpqua River Light was first lit in 1894 and, according to Wikipedia, was built from the same plans as Heceta Head and is virtually identical to it. A drive that visits both lighthouses is a good way to spend a day.

Dunes City, in Lane County, is a small, mostly rural city whose 2020 population was 1,428, according to Wikipedia.

📦 Sending Flowers to the Coast

Now the practical part, which comes from our own experience and not from Wikipedia. The coast has a different population from the valley. According to Wikipedia, about 44 percent of Florence residents were 65 or older in the 2020 census, and about one-third of the city’s population consists of retirees. Wikipedia says about 46 percent of Dunes City residents were 65 or older. So the flowers that go to the coast tend to be:

  • Get-well and thinking-of-you flowers for a parent or grandparent. Wikipedia says Peace Harbor Hospital serves western Lane County. Check with the patient or the family before you send, because each facility sets its own rules. Our get-well flowers guide covers what to think about.
  • Sympathy flowers for a coastal service. Our post on sympathy flower etiquette explains how to choose and where to send.
  • Birthday and anniversary flowers for family who moved to the coast, and thank-you flowers for the neighbor who keeps an eye on the place. See our thank-you flowers page.
  • Welcome flowers for a vacation rental. Include the rental’s name, the unit, the guest’s name, and the arrival date, and tell us where flowers can be left if nobody is there.

A few tips for the weather. This is our own advice: keep arrangements compact, because wind and rain are hard on a tall bouquet and a rental table is usually small; name a sheltered place for a delivery to be left; and choose sturdy flowers, such as chrysanthemums, in the cool, damp months. Our mums guide explains why they hold up. When the flowers arrive, our guide to keeping cut flowers fresh will keep them going. The coast is farther from our shop than our in-town Eugene route, so timing is confirmed when you order; if you need a particular day, tell us when you order. We deliver seven days a week, including Sundays.

🚗 A Flower-Lover’s Day Trip from Eugene

Here is a route, using only the distances from the sources above. Head west on Highway 126 to Florence and start in Old Town, along the river and under the 1936 bridge. Drive about five miles north on U.S. 101 to Darlingtonia State Natural Site and walk the loop through the cobra lilies. Continue 11 miles north of Florence to the Sea Lion Caves and two miles beyond to Heceta Head Light. If you still have daylight, go on to Yachats, 23 miles north of Florence, for the 804 Trail. Take a bouquet for whoever you are visiting, or send one ahead so it is waiting. If you are heading south instead, Reedsport, the elk at Dean Creek, and the lighthouse at Winchester Bay make a good second day.

For an easier version at home, our perfect Saturday in Eugene guide has plans that do not require a long drive.
